Like Nataliwind above, I try to plan out my photos so there is little or no need to edit (other than to resize to fit on the web site). It has been called 'editing in the camera' before. As a longtime photographer, I pay attention to what is falling in the background or put a background I want behind my subject. I control harsh shadows by adding a piece of white paper in front of the flash to diffuse the light.

I use Irfanview
Just like Bruce, I used to use CS5, but since I "discovered" the Image Editor in this forum I only use this one. I've bookmarked it so it's always visible. The only editing I do to my pictures is resizing to be able to post them.
I am a little different you all - I use photoscape (another free be )
I use Aperture on my Mac
I use CS6 most of the time easy and fast =)
