    Default A zygopetalum next?

I've wanted one of these since i saw my first one in February - but had no idea then how many kinds there are. I have a couple of questions for the senior growers:

    1) Species vs. hybrid? I need some specific names here.

    2) which one has the nicest fragrance?

    3) How long do the blooms last?

    4) Would it be more challenging to grow this than, say, the paphs, oncids, and dens I have? In other words, as a new grower, do I have any business looking into this species at all?; and ,

    5) would this be one of those times that online ordering beats out local nursery stock?

Thanks to all you wiser folks -

    Maura

I have a bollopetalum (a zygo x bollea), and it is easy and lovely...but not that strong a scent. I am thinking of trying zygo mackayi next, as it is supposed to be pretty easy & very fragrant. They do like high humidity, though..which is a bit tricky for me sometimes.

    Good luck!

Okay - not surprising, but I've never heard of either of those - are you able to find them around the nurseries in TX, or would you have to order it?

I bought mine online. Zygo mackayi I have seen for sale by a vendor at the local orchid show, but not at a nursery.

In line with Kathi's comment, if there are any shows scheduled in your area, I recommend checking there. The shows I've been at have always had some gorgeous Zygs.

I did a little research on zygos, and I think it would be worth a try - we actually have an auction at our orchid society on Saturday, so I'll start there first - then there's one in Birmingham, Alabama in the early fall - but knowing me, I'll have to make something happen before I wait out a reasonable length of time. I'm pretty excited at the thought of having one in my collection.

Thanks for the input - always appreciated.

I had a Zygo B.G. White for some time. It was easy to grow and rebloom...and it smelled wonderfully! I did let it go to someone else though as I was growing it outdoors and the humidity here isn't so great...looked terrible but that didn't affect its blooming. I would think that the humidity in the southeast would be sufficient to keep it looking decent.

You'd probably love it...looks much like the one in your profile pic with a bit more green......at least in my clone. And it smelled somewhat like lilacs.

LILACS! Next to peonies, lilacs are what I miss most about New England (flower-wise, of course)....
