The 2nd set of seedlings using the Vanda Mimi Palmer ' Teo Boon Hian' HCC/HRT clone. This is the best of that cross, in my opinion.
Great color, love it.
Brilliant color on this vanda orchid hybrid. So pretty.
cheers,
BD
Oh, Cathy, you've got a gift with those vandas. How lovely!
lovely.
Cathy, this is even better than the other one!!!!!! At last a V Mimi Palmer cross that has managed to break the tessellata 'stranglehold'. I'm referring to the colour of the blooms and the lip which show the influence of V Josephine van Brero. It has taken more than 40 years for the JVB trait to show. I ordered my first V Mimi Palmer (V Tan Chay Yan x tessellata ) in 1965 from the originator of the cross, Gem Nursery of Singapore (no more in business) and doubted that it really was a Tan Chay Yan cross as there was no trace of JVB influence, which was so dominant in crosses with other vandas.
Subsequent repeat crosses by others showed the same results - slate/greyish blue colour with nary a trace of JVB. Thailand has made many crosses of V Mimi Palmer with many of their beautiful vandas and still the tessellata was dominant. This is the first I have seen where the JVB influence is apparent. This is a hybridiser's dream - the form and beautiful peach salmon colour of JVB and the tesselations of tessellata . This must be the flower the original breeder of V Mimi Palmer envisaged and which I had hoped for. Thanks Cathy for posting and I'm glad I am able to see it in my lifetime.
BTW I'll be looking for one of these . It must be the influence of V Mimi Palmer 'Teo Boon Hian' HCC/RHT clone. It should read RHT acronym for Royal Horticultural Society of Thailand. Gosh I can't remember when I've been so excited over an orchid.
Impressive just by its looks, Yew's story only makes this hybrid more alluring. Wonderful post Cathy. AL
Love it. It's such a pretty color. Good job.
All I can say is WOW after reading the story of the cross. In all honesty, the bloom is past its prime. I knew it and the other cross were nice, just not like this.
I will have to tell you the story of how this plant got knocked over in a storm. It caused the top to snap off. It didn't have any roots. I tried and failed in laying it on sphagnum. I lost the entire top. It took a while and I finally got an two offshoot. They both are good sized about 5 years old. One of the offshoots has never spiked.
I'm excited to read your post Yew. I appreciate you telling me about the plant. Thanks very much.
Cathy this is very pretty one, lovely... does it inherit the strong smell from Mimi Palmer?
