Default SLCattleya colour's not as good why?

Just a bit frustrating when I bought this cattleya the boolms were of bright orange, those blooms have now gone and its been over a month after my care and another flower that has been in bud has bloomed ; however the colour is a faint shade of orange, also have noticed one bud blast in the axil of a flower bud... Any tip pr advice would be greatful.

I've had this happening to a few of my orchids and could be due to a number of reasons; light levels, fertilisers, changes in temperature.

    Btw your blooms are lovely.

I agree with Yew, change in temperature and light are main instrumental reasons for the red and orange coloured orchids to change color. As a rule cooler temperatures coupled with bright light induces darker blooms with heavier texture, whereas warmer conditions and low light trigger fainter coloration.

I agree with Yew Sung and Amey...Being in Florida where the temperatures hover around 92 can cause many of my blooms to change color (fade) especially the cattleyas.

I've often found that if I bring an orchid inside that's been out for the summer, the first buds to open tend to have deeper colors than ones that have spent more time inside in bud. I've always assumed it's the lower light.

Agree! I have had this happen to orchids in my collection as well. Some oncidiums will even bloom with different degrees of saturation on the same plant because of a shift in temperatures. One that comes to mind is Linda Isler 'Red'. I have had blood red blooms and then brown/red blooms on the same plant different spike at the same time.

    cheers,

I think it's a change in temp. Usually, cooler grown = better color. Never heard about the light level thing, but it's possible i guess.
