I reckon that I am away from home for perhaps 20% of the time, one way or another. For absences of more than a week, I have a man ( I pay him a nominal amount - say $40 per week) who is instructed to spray all the hanging plants with rain water. I have a motorised pump , long hose lines, lances etc, so all he has to do is switch on and walk along...In the winter I say - do it every 3 days or thereabouts ; in the summer , daily, unless we have that very rare thing in England, a hot spell - in which case, night and morning.
Plants in pots are not to be watered at all.
If the absence is more than 2 weeks, then, ( summer only, not winter) water everything once.
Less than 1 week - then in the winter I would not worry at all abouit non-watering ; in the summer, maybe ask for some spraying.
I try not be away much longer nowadays - I find that even on the most fabulous trips I am lying awake thinking about all the things OI am missing at home, by about day 10 ! Nedxt year my wife insists we will be away 3 weeks, as its a special birthday - but even so I am sure that I shall be wishing I had been stronger and resisted !
