I am not sure how cold hardy a duhat tree would be. I know they do great in the Philippines, we had a couple of large trees in my grandmother's property.
I have tried a couple of Philippine mangos here and they did not survive our winters. Our winter here is not severe, but still cold enough to kill most tropicals if not protected.
I have one young Philippine/Java guava tree that loses its leaves in winter but is otherwise ok. I planted 3 of the same variety and only one made it through the first winter.
I am thinking that if I keep the duhat tree in a large pot and move it into the greenhouse during winter, I can plant it in the ground once it has matured enough to survive the winter.

But who knows Planting tropical trees in southern California is always a gamble. Sometimes you get lucky and end up with that .01% seedling that thrives in your local climate.

My wish list of Philippine trees for my property:
    1. Philippine mango
    2. Atis
    3. Balimbing
    4. Guyabano

    Hey John,

I'm not too sure if a 'duhat' tree can withstand prolonged cold in a temperate zone area like in So. Cal.
Also the duhat likes plenty of water during its growing period and here in the Phils it enjoys year round water due to our rains.

If the Philippine mango tree didn't survive (which is a very robust tree compared against the duhat) ... I doubt if the duhat will survive too. Just for fun you might try and I agree wit you that its chances of survival might be far better if it gets to be a bigger plant.

Here is something I found on the net regarding the cultural requirement and info on the duhat tree (Syzygium cumini)
issg Database: Ecology of Syzygium cumini

My wish list of Philippine trees for my property: thanks but the trees mentioned below are introduced species except for Balimbing and Duhat
    1. Philippine mango (India)
    2. Atis (tropical america)
    3. Balimbing (almost throughout asia including my country)
    4. Guyabano (tropical america)
    5. Duhat (Philippines, India etc)
    Anyway, just for added info.

    thanks and Godbless
