Wow. I have never seen a deflasking before.

I am in the midst of deflasking a miniature phal hybrid and came across some strange growths. Instead of roots, the clumps have these thick bumpy nodes (look kind of like old hoya bloom spurs). Either they are still protocorms or some sort of deformity. If I were at all equipped to replate I might try that, but this is only my second time deflasking.
I am putting my seedlings into sphagnum. Will these grow at all if I pot them up?
I might have waited to deflask at all except the agar was pretty mixed up from shipping and there was one clear bully in the bunch that needed to come out.
Wow. I have never seen a deflasking before.
This is interesting, Trish! I'm sure that if they are going onto moss that they will grow for you. Just make sure that they have enough humidity surrounding them...Betty
Goodness that one phal seedling is big for just out of a flask. The others are just smaller. I can see roots and leaves on them. Put them together in sphagnum and realize they will take longer to reach flowering size Some will probably be multiple plants and some will probably die. But don't throw them out.
There was definitely some size variation in this flask:
The weird knobs do make me wonder, though. They aren't roots, per se. The bottom growth in this picture has one leaf in the lower corner and the rest are oblong alien protuberances.
Well, any clump that had a leaf got put in a compot. It violates my inner dutchness to throw anything out! Their "pots" are a 4 oz dessert cup and a 1Tablespoon medicine cup.
Betty, my first attempt at unflasking included an Enc. cordigera/Toshie Aoki cross, and Enc. inaguensis X Enc. phonicea. It has been a couple of weeks and I've only killed a thimble-full so far.
I think that the odd knobs might be what the seedling looks like before it grows leaves or roots and that they're just sort of clumped together. I think you may find that if you plant a clump with a leave, roots, and knobs, that you may end up with more than one plant--or you may not. I'm not at all an expert, but found similar things in the flasks I've had.
Those nodes look like PLB's (Protocorn Like Bodies). There might be some growth after deflasking. I agree with you on the placement on compots. Make sure they are in a shaded area for a couple of weeks. How about a dome or plastic cover so they don't dry out? The larger one might be a tetraploid! Good luck and keep us posted!

WOW! It's going to be fun to watch all these babies grow, Trish! Please keep all of us updated from time to time...Thanks... Betty
Trish, it looks like you did exactly what I would have done. Glad you did not throw any of those little orchids out. That one seedling that is as large as your hand is so unusual. Guess it will be a super grower.
cheers,
BD
Gargantuan seedling or you have little munchkin hands This thread is so interesting. Keep posting pictures.
