Do you grow Terrestrial Orchids?

Hi all,

How many of us grow Terrestrials? I LOVE some of these little things, problem is that they seem to be in VERY short supply here in NZ.

Do you grow a particular group? Ie, asian, european, north american, or do you just grow a certain genus? Or do you grow whats available, whenever its available?

Here are some of mine:

Satyrium odorum-African-South Africa


Corybas sp-New Zealand (Oceania)


Pleione formosana-Asian-Himalayas


Disa Watsonii-Africa-South Africa


I also have several Disa hybrids and species plants, two Dactylorhiza maculata (European), some Paphiopedilum species and a hybrid (if you could classify them as terrestrials), Blettila striata (Asian), some Pterostylis curta and banksii (Oceania), Myrmechila trapeziformis and Simpliglottis valida, Thelymitra formosa, Thelymitra sanscilia and Nematoceras aff trilobum (all Oceania).

My only terrestrials are Pleione and Bletilla. But I love them!
Thsi spring I saw cypripediums for sale, but they were too expensive for my budget.

Lucky you! i cant so much as lay an eyeball on a cyp here, none available. You should get one next time you see one though, regardless of the price, especially if its a species, because one day soon, there wont be any cyp species for us to enjoy at the rate poaching is going. Did you know that an incredibly rare Cypripedium was found growing in a paved road in England, so local authorities erected electric fences and had guards 24/7 around it? Imagine that! If only NZ authorities were so caring, instead of passing you from one organisation to the next when you find a rare beauty.

I grow spathoglottis plicata in combination of rocks, soil, with charcoal and some humus.

I think they were hybrids Jordan! There are several cypripedium farms here in Europe.
In Romania, where I live, we have Cypripedium calceolus as an endemic species, but it is very rare these days, because of overcollecting, although it is a protected species since 1940!

It qualifies Jeff! it is a terrestrial....

I know what you mean Jordan. I went on a mountain trip and found a few, not in bloom. I hardly resisted the urge to collect them. And I'm glad I did!

Sometimes it isnt a bad thing, if you know what your doing. I have "rescued" a few of our natives, which are supposed to be strictly eft alone, where possums, snails and cars can mow over them. So i saved some and they are thriving! Much better than if they were in their natural environment. Sometimes i think this is where "conservation" FAILS

True!! That was my first thought, but I'm not fammiliar with cypripediums, and I didn't want to kill the plant, because I'd felt so bad!
