    Default BLC cattleya with problems...

I am new to orchid growing and also to forum conversation so I have a lot to learn. BD suggested that I post this thread and see what ideas I might receive. I recently got a BLC cattleya from a big box garden center, probably a big mistake but I'll learn. When I re potted it I found that all the roots were dead. I cleaned the old potting mixture off and removed the dead roots and then put it in a mixture of bark, charcoal and sponge rock. The pseudobulbs are at the surface of the mix and it is secured in place. After a couple of weeks new roots began to appear and a new shoot developed. When the new roots get to be 1/4 to 3/8 inches long and the white sheath develops the dark green tips of the roots turn black and die and disappear entirely. More roots keep developing but the same process happens. I water thoroughly once a week and keep the plant out of the rain in an outdoors sheltered area with good air circulation. I receives bright morning sunlight a thereafter bright filtered light. The temperature range is about 85- 90 daytime and 70 - 75 at night. Here in Stuart FL the humidity averages 75%. Any Ideas about what might be causing the loss of the root tips? The plant seems to be healthy otherwise. Thanks, Fred

It sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. If humidity is the problem you can try misting aound the base of the psuedobulb every morning and continue to water once a week like you're doing. A little hand sprayer costs a couple dollars. Misting in the area where you normally see roots form can encourage their formation. The idea is not to soak the area but just add a little humidity. Good luck.

Thanks Jeff, I'll give that a try. It keeps trying to grow roots so I guess it is basically healthy. I was concerned that there may be a disease present. Best, Fred
