U feed it banana peels? Really? What do you do, chop them up?No good stories about the horn, just feed him banana peels once in a while and mist when I do the orchids.

Ok so here are my stag horn and my brom. I've had both for about a year now. The stag started out with two horns and the brom was just a little feller. He's now got one branch that's about 2 feet long. I call him mr sticky since well the only thing the tag said was Brom Species group 8. Since I couldn't find anything about species group 8. I decided that because I can't touch him without getting stuck about a gagillion times that his name would be either ouch &%*$ species 8 my *%& plant *%&$ or mr. sticky.
No good stories about the horn, just feed him banana peels once in a while and mist when I do the orchids.

Nope I generally just fold them up and put behind it's ummm shields?, not sure what they are called the flat round parts. The peels turn black, oddly they don't mold, fruit flys buzz around for a while. It wasn't doing very well and the lady who gave it to me asked if I had given it a banana peel... I looked at her much like the smilie and she said try it. I did and it grew alot more horns.Originally Posted by Brutal_Dreamer
As far as Mr. Sticky he gets watered when it rains and if it's really dry for a while I squirt him with the hose.
Wolf, I was told that the flat round leafs are the male leafs and the horn leafs are the female part of the plant. Ever hear this? The one we have had all of these spores on the underside tips of the 'female' leafs. At first I thought the plant was dying or had a problem, but a local guy who grows these said that they were just spores. I have never had anyone confirm the story of the male and female leaf parts, but the spores make perfect sense to me now that I know what I am looking at on the leaf.

Nope hadn't heard that before. Really don't know much about these except I've always liked them and wanted one. There's a massive one down the street I'll have to take a picture of.
That is one crazy looking Bromeliad Wolf! And it does look like it has quite scary leaf edges... no wonder it's growing to be specimen size and undivided!
I absolutely love your Staghorn... it is so cute and healthy looking! Do you know what type this one is? It doesn't seem to have that fork in the leaves.. or will that come later I wonder...
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

yeah well the brom is all one stem that branched. I ain't going near it.
As far as the type, I've been told in another thread it's a triangle type, but don't really know what it'll look like it's just a baby.
I'll take a pic of the one down the street sometime soon... It's hanging off of a tree by a huge tow chain.
Wolf, I think I've identified your staghorn. Try this link
