Default Anyone have experience with LED lighting?

I currently grow my orchids outdoors in the summer and in my basement grow
area in the winter. Currently I have been using t5 flourescents and and have done
    well with them.

I'm considering adding another grow area (these darn orchids keep following me home)
and wanted to get people's thoughts on LED lighting. I looked through the Lights section
and there are not a lot of postings on this.

Also, I saw someone else had the idea of making a lighting system out of LED Christmas
lights. I'm sure they could be picked up cheap at all the after-Christmas sales. Anyone
ever do this and have good results?

The only thread I know about LED and orchids is on the french forum. 15 pages of explanations and illustrations. "Le Steph" has very good results with his orchids.
Maybe you understand french or you can try with Google translator.
    Link for the Thread.
I think you can read it without logging.

I can understand about every other word of it--my french classes were about 50 years ago. It sounds like they've had positive experience, but that the LEDs cost more.

I tried one of the very early and cheap LED panels, and found it to be flaky and wired in parallel so that one problem led meant a whole row and column were out.

Last week I visited a hydroponic shop with a friend and saw several examples of LED systems that emitted more light and appeared far better put together. They were expensive. However, if I find I want to add some lights, that's what I'd try. But I have to admit that I like experimenting.

Maybe I could ask Stephane to join us on OT. I try to convince him.

Led lights for intensity are expensive. The normal ones are just not strong enough. Led light for sale marine corals are fantastic. Low wattage and heat plus last very long but very expensive. In the thousands for those 4 feet and above.
