    Default Colorful Winter Ahead

I was working with the orchids tonight and was thrilled to see all the spikes that are developing for what hopefully will be a colorful winter bloom season. The first cymbidium I have ever had spike is beginning to show its buds. It is a NOID but am excited just the same. My Nodosa has at least 5 spikes forming. This is the first I have gotten one to spike and the only mount I have. It is also the first I haven't killed. There are several oncidiums spiking and a dendrobium plus at least 15 phals in different stages of spike development and several paphs in bud. I also have a medusa with 12 buds. I can hardly wait to see the parade of blooms that 2012 will hopefully bring.

Finally a reward for all the hard work & tlc youve invested in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!At this point though, once youve clocked the joys of spikes and the upcoming inflorescences, isnt it funny how they all seem to stop in time??? Or worse esp in my case for being clumsy and knocking them off or snapping one. Is your Medusa a bulbo?. Will be a colourful new year and hopefully a synchronized display. One thing ive had to watch with cymbs in spike, Bill, is all those dried sheaths that can amass unnoticed (unless your strict at hygiene), collecting moisture and sending mildew/fungi in the wrong direction to those very susceptible new spikes. Extremely frustrating! I do wick/blot mine routinely at growth start point with tissue to avoid any risk. A Happy new year in Bills greenhouse and your orchids agree!

I really look forward to your pictures, maybe you can post a few in different stages which is always helpful to see how long it takes and what the spikes look like before the full bloom.

Nice going, Bill. I,too, have a standard NOID cymbidium; it started to spike before I went on vacation and well.... we'll see if the spikes survive. Everyone around here told me you can't get a cym. to spike in Atlanta, so I was determined to prove them wrong! Take LOTS of pictures - I need to live a little vicariously these days.

Bill; I am looking forward to seeing your floral cornucopia as it develops. My gosh you must be doing something right to bring all these orchids to spike up there in the frozen wilds of Pennsylvania. You would think the 'chids' would look out the window and expect first class tickets to Florida to bloom their little heads off like this. Nice going Bill! AL
