Melt butter and cheese in saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly.
After mixture is melted, remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
Add dry ingredients and mix quickly until smooth.
Spread in buttered dish and pat pecans over top, if desired.
Let stand until set, then cut into squares.

It's very easy to halve the batch. It's impossible to tell this from more complicated fudge recipes except that this never turns out grainy or gets dry crusty edges. Your friends will marvel at your masterful candy-making skills.
