Default Superthrive - The aged-old question, Nectar of the Gods or Witches Brew?

I was just reading a post made on Superthrive and wondered how many growers here consider it essential and how many scoff at its said abilities?

Interesting poll. Will be curious to read responces and see results. I am not voting because neither query fits me. I use the product when I have it and think i get results with root growth. If I run out I don't panic and make an emergency trip to the garden center to buy more. It is expensive and each time I buy it I think that I could be buying another orchid. I think you are going to find a wide variety of opinions with this. Should be fun or at least interesting to hear some comments and theories.
I guess what I am saying is that it is not the end all of end all/miricle of miricle products. I have never found a product for orchids or any other plant that is. The only real requirement to grow them is to love them enough to give them the basics that they require, a little secret treat known only to you the grower/custodian and then just let them grow to be themselves---the MOST beautiful flower on earth! Remember at one time they were used as packing material for items being shipped and seemed to survive that and grow again once given care.

I agree almost 100%, Bill. I know people that swear by it and grow amazing plants and these are competent growers and I sort of think they would have amazing plants without it. I also know people that will bust out laughing if you mention it I'm on the fence. I have it but I also have read that it needs to be fresh. That an old bottle is worthless? I'm no expert on the expiration of the product.
I too am going to wait to vote. I would like to read what everyone has to say about it.

People always seem to be on the fence on this one. I personally do not use it because there are much less expensive fertilizers that do just as well for my orchids IMO but I am not a scientist and have only my opinion. I am happy (for the most part) with the way my plants bloom and grow. I don't think spending extra money on a fertilizer like this really makes a difference - though, I do use a variety of fertilizers on my orchids. I started to pick some up one time and saw how small the bottle was and how concentrated the formula was and decided that it wasn't for me. Maybe if I tried it, I would like it, but for now the current use of miracle gro and fish fertilizer seem to keep the orchids fairly happy. I decided not to vote in the poll since an endorsement from me either way might sway someone's opinion and since I don't use it, who knows - maybe it is nectar from the gods... haha.. I just don't know.

    Cheers,
    BD

What amazes me most about the product is how many threads are started about it. What I always said is that to me, the most enjoyable/entertaining thing about Superthrive, is the packaging. Its right out of a traveling medicine show! Prof Marvel from the Wizard of OZ would have been proud to peddle it, but he would have only charged a buck a bottle!
Being a bit more serious, I have used it long ago. More with trying to revive bonsai that were knocking on heaven's door. Never really had much success with it. The main reason I don't use it any more, besides the fact that I feel liquid seaweed serves the same purpose and much more effectively, is I think its next to impossible to find any thats 'fresh'. Most of it I see sold here in FL is usually sitting out in the sun or at least heat for gosh knows how long, so those miraculous vitamins, minerals and other plant elixirs are probably way past the time when they'd do any good anyway. I think that lots of people using it would be better off to crush up some vitamine B-12 tabs and mix it with water and spray it on their plants. At least you'd know it was fresh.

I have only used Superthrive on fairly healthy potted rose bushes and really didn't see any change for the better in leaves, stem growth, or blooms. Some people as has been said love the stuff including one Vanda grower who's reasoning and cultural information I truly respect, except for this product...............AL
