    Exclamation Dendrobium Keiki's

Can somebody tell me why Dens are so anxious to make Keiki's? I have a Nobile which refuses to flower but has clusters of Keikis near the top of the stalks. Have tried planting the plant not so deep, with no success.Name: Dendrobium-nobile.jpg

You need to stop watering it in the winter, cut right down. If you water in the rest period (winter) you just end up with a tonnage of keikeis! It is fun for a while, but then it gets to be a pain lol

Do all Dendrobiums need to have a winter rest? I have two Dendrobiums that are flowering was told by vendor to stop watering for three to four weeks after flowering. Is this wise- no water at all.

No, just a certain group-the nobile group, thats D. nobile, all its hybrids, D. thyrsifolium etc etc, all those sorts. In other words, the majority of SE Asian ones, to mimic monsoon cycles. The Aussie ones like water all year round.

Thanks, Kiwiorchids. I understood immediately when you mentioned the monsoon cycle. Makes sense. I have one of each type.

I have several dens which get a winters rest including nobile dens. I stop watering in mid to late October and don't water again until new growth starts. Then I start watering very lightly and resume heavy watering mid spring. Initially it was very hard not to water as that is just instinctual, but that's what happens in nature. During the winter rest I increase my light also.

Do you do this with your aussie types, like D. kingianum? Naturally they receive ample water all year round, like in NSW or costal Queensland. Also Phalaenopsis types like D. bigibbum like plenty of water, again to mimick the tropical, wet conditions of the Queensland rainforest.

Hi Rosa02, I think I have the same one like yours too. I think it's den kingianum & mine is flowering right now. I watered it once per week & have no problem with keikeis. Good luck on yours

Nope, hers is Dendrobium nobile, if not that, one of the species many hybrids. D. kingianum has MUCH smaller flowers, and they are usually heavily scented and can range from dark purple through to white. Even the plants look completely different. D kingianum is an Aussie dendrobium, so it LOVES ample water all year round. thats why you dont have issues with keikeis, whereas, thats all you would get if you did that to a nobile I should take a photo of my two to compare, but it is POURING down outside, we have a massive, deep low coming over, known as a weather bomb. Hopefully the roof wont blow off in the night, or the windows wont blow in!
