Sunflowers too eh? I think I should look deeper into this whole business and wee how much study has been done- how widespread that form of chemical aggression is in nature... I felt a bit foolish when the opposite, mycorhizal symbiosis, turned out not to be just an orchid thing, but practically everywhere. (I really ought to have known- after all fungi are ubuquitous, and crucial in so many ways.)

Thanks Cathy. This is turning out to be a fertile thread- kudos to whoever started it... Oh look: it was me! Oh dear!

I would caution against the use of sunflower seeds in that they can kill plants the same way that black walnut trees do. That is why many times under bird feeders that have held sunflower seeds plants will not grow or are very small and weak. Apparently it is the seed and not the plant that carries the toxins. I would still be hesitant having them growing with or near my orchids.
