first Paphs

And the first paphs to join my collection are
Paph Hampshire Raven
Paph Laser x Paph Cherry Cider...

Now I've read the care sheet on here and I've read a few others and it sounds like I may need to keep these puppies indoors. Hottest temp recomended is around 85... yet they were outside at work and look fine and dandy.

Also I have searched google and a few other places and can't seem to find pics of the cross or Hampshire Raven... So if you have any I would really like to take a peek at them if you can post a piccie of them.

Also any advice from other growers in hotter climes would be appreciated.

Hi Wolf,

Paph Hampshire Raven is a cross between Paph Maudiae and Paph Maude Raven. Registered in 2001. So I guess this will be one of the maudiae type hybrids.

Paph Laser and Paph Cherry Cider are also popular maudiae types especially the first. From what I've seen of Laser they tend to be vinicolours and going by the name of Cherry Cider, sounds like another dark colour... so you may have a plant with lots of very dark red/black colours.. out of interest, is there much red pigmentation on the leaf base? Jason (aka jmoney) have previously said that it is a good indicator of flower colour...

Say, Wolf, Ithought you worked at the big Orange store.... the one around here never has plants like that! Just no name standard Phals and a few Dends..... I'm jealous! (Although I would be poorer if they did carry nice ones like that)

The leaves are really a nice green with a checkerboard of darker green the the spikes on each are almost black with hints of red, the bud is the same color. The base of the leaves on Hampshire Raven are really dark redish black, on Lazer x cherry cider is dark red but not as dark as the other.

I do indeed work at the big orange store - I've noticed that the one here and in Marathon seems to get an odd ball special orchid once in a while.

The big orange here in Augusta Ga normaly only has Dens and Phals, but the Big Blue your competitor has Dens, Phals, Onc and Vandas. I have seen some Maxilarias and some Paphs there too. Big Blue here normaly ahs ALOT better seletion than the orange guys, but they have been getting more stingy on the prices too. Even the half dead ones that can be saved don't even get the price breaks they used to. Half dead Vandas going for 25 still from a retail of 50.

We have lots of different ones at work paphs, dens, phals, oncids and similars.

I can explain why they don't give you a price break - if it dies they mark it down in a book and get credit for it from the vendor. Apparently there isn't enough of a mark up to make it worth while to discount them.

the big orange near me usually has phals, onc and dends. Occasionally an intergenic. Never seen a paph, but the one near my sister (45 miles away) has a great selection, but almost always No ID. Big Blue is building a store right near me, I am hoping the competition may get both of them to offer better stuff. Although to be honest, I'm out of room. Considering turning the 2nd bedroom into a grow area - but don't know where I'll put my 80 year old parents when they come to visit!!! Guess I'll have to give them my room and I'll sleep on the blow up bed. Wonder which one of us the cat will choose to sleep with! LOL

Diane, I do the same... I let guests sleep in my room whilst I have the sofa bed in the lounge... it's a small price to pay for more orchids...
