it is not so hard actually, the trick is to score the seed before you try germinating it.
i tried a couple last fall (mistake), but they never got past the little green shoot stage. i guess it was just too chilly, and they LOVE heat. i may try again with a seedling mat under them, though trying to grow them here in canada seems a little silly.
i've read that they successfully germinated seeds found in an egyptian tomb that were apparently 3000 years old! so you could actually go to a craft store and buy one of those dried up seed heads and try it. they are really cheap.
