    Default Sick Colm. Wildcat 'Carmela'

    Hello!

I've had this orchid almost a year now. When I bought him he was nice and tall and had two lovely stalks of flowers. Early on I loved it too much and watered it quite a bit more then it wanted. It lost most of its roots due to rot but seemed to do well for six months (even sprouting two new growths) until about two months ago. It went from 4 pseudobulbs and 2 new growths to 1 sad looking pseudobulb and a still somewhat vigorous new growth.

Clearly I love this little guy and would like to save him. Any helpful ideas?

He has no roots left, is potted in a bark mix, and I am misting him 2x a day to get him some water. He is in a South facing window with shade and no direct sunlight.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure about what exactly to tell you but I'm guessing the bark may not be working for you if you mist it twice a day, if I'm understanding you correctly. It may be staying too moist, which is rotting the roots.

Have you tried semi hydro or 'spag and bag'? I can tell you what I was told to encourage the roots. This is the link for the s/h; http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...epi-bloom.html . Now I got a hint for this method from one of the senior members; put some rooting compound in the water when you pre-soak the clay balls over night, dust the rooting compound on the orchid roots as well before setting it up in the s/h. I have done this and it has worked, you can do the same prep before trying the 'spag and bag' too. Depending on your environment, humidity levels and such, you may have to reduce the level of water in the s/h container. I have very little to no water in mine, because of the condensation, it stays moist without actually sitting in the water. I've had only tried 'spag and bag' once, since sphagnum moss isn't sold here I used news print instead, so I guess it's 'paper and bag', lol.

After all that, I hope it works out.

Yes, I suspect the bark is too big for this last little growth and will consider repotting it to something better for root growth. Rooting compound I agree is a must. I'll have to order some before I can make any changes.

    Thanks Dazed!

Despite my best efforts, my little guy just got sicker. He lost his last pseudobulb to rot and is now just a few leaves and a little stem. I tried a sphag & bag but had mold problems. My last ditch effort is a water culture. A drastic step, I don't have high hopes but keep your fingers crossed I can save this guy!

Take it out of everything! Let it completely dry out on a saucer, off to a side in a shaded humid spot and forget it. Trust me on this. I've done it and they catch themselves and start growing after a few months. If you want to give it a little spritz of weak fert once a month and dust it with rooting compound, that would boost it. But trust me on just leaving it alone unpotted.
