Default advice on a camera purchase

First of all, I would like to stress "simple, simple".

The camera that I have been taking shots of my orchids with is one that we already had before I started growing a few years ago. It finally bit the dust, so I need to purchase another one. I know close to nothing about cameras, so I'll just read what's printed on this one. It is an Olumpus Camedia Digital 4000 Zoom. Also, there a "sticker" on it that says 4.0 megapixel.

I want a very "easy to use" camera, but will take as decent as poss. pictures of my orchids. One that takes pics. as good as what I used before it died, but better is always better. Nothing elaborate with a tripod, etc. I'd rather leave that to you pros.

I would appreciate any help you can offer me...
    Vicki

    Hi Vicki,

Back in March when getting ready to go on my study abroad trip to central Europe, I purchased a SONY Cyber-Shot, 16.1 Mega Pixel camera. It is a really simple point and shoot camera, but has lots of settings and surprisingly very good quality photos. It has a built in image stabilizer so no tripod is necessary. It also adjust to light settings or you can simply turn off the flash if you don't want it. I'm sure there are nicer cameras out there, but this little one surprised me. It was a camera to stand in for my nice camera that I didn't want to carry around during travel. It is about the size of a credit card and about 5/8 of an inch thick. I carry it in my front pocket when going to the greenhouse or events where I don't want to risk messing up my really nice camera.

I got the black one, but it was also in silver and other colors. It cost me about 80 dollars. I also got a 32 gig memory card for it so that I rarely have to delete photos. It also takes good quality video.

    Olympus PEN E-PL1

I mounted a macro lens with a +1 filter on it for all my shot.

for plants photography, the D-SLR is better then a pocket camera. In addition buy DCR-250 or 150 Super Macro conversion lens for D-SLR camera from Raynox, for macro pictures.

Thank you for the info, Mietek. Assuming the the D-SLR is the camera you use, I'm sure you take nice pictures with good quality resolution...hopefully I'll see them sometime.
