Can I list my kids as "pests?" In the last two days, my daughter has knocked two of my orchids off their perches, scattering bark and detritus all over the carpet. At least she was honest about it, and it WAS kind of cute when she sheepishly approached me and said, "Mommy, I dumped your pwant. I sowwy." Still, between my two rugrats, I'm surprised any of my plants survive!

here in los angeles we have ants that carry scale, mealies, and aphids, and red spider mites always attack at some point over summer, but we have a much more devestating pest that i cannot identify yet, but attacks members of the cattleya tribe, like epidendrums, and some phals and lidisias. little tiny black barely moving specks, like flea shaped, that cling to the undersides of leaves. you get this silvery stippling look which eventually can turn to black and yellow sick looking spots or even dried spots on the leaves, once you remove the pests the damage slowly shows itself. i don;t know what they are, but qwuickly can decimate ludisias. i get them ini remote places indoors, and on my balcony in the shade every spring and sometimes again in the summer they come back. i use neem and dishsoap sprays routinely to keep them at bay.

My orchids and house plants spend some of the summer outside - when the great British summer allows! Every year my Frangipani, cacti and Clivia come back in with red spider mite and/or mealy bugs. The orchids however never have anything! More luck than anything I think

For the non-orchids, like frangipani and hibiscus, I treat with a 3 in 1 granular rose systemic and that takes care of mites, aphids, and the rest for those plants. One applies it every six weeks (takes a few weeks to get started. My canivorous plants (pitcher and butterwort) seem to also enjoy the bugs.
I seem to have a variety of pests this year so will be using something while they are still outside.

I selected scale because because those little critters are really hard to eradicate, BUT today after dropping one pot and knocking a mount off the wall, I decided I may be a pest to my orchids!!!

Why not spider mite included in the poll list? I have badly suffered from this nasty pest.

Voted mealy, but white fly wasn't listed. Mix of both.

Spider mites destroyed my Alocasia Amazonica (not orchid) best way to rid them do not use insecticides. This can actually kill their predetors more than it does them. During seasons of high humidity and lower temps (like colorado) they are almost impossible to control. The smell of Bay Leaves seem to repel them. I boil the leaves in H2O and spritz my leaves with it. Bay leaves also repel ants that protect mealy, bedbugs, and fleas.

The most persistent problem has been with scale, though the Maine Coon cat has declared war on my paphs. I try to keep up with the scale using horticultural oil, which seems to work well if I keep at it. Not willing to use systemic insecticides, since I DO have orchid-munching felines...

Slugs/snails go for my Dendrobiums as if they are drugs...one was almost completely decapitated once.
