Default How to cut a small plastic basket away from a vanda

i BOUGHT 3 vandas and 2 ARE so very root tangled and tied that I was wondering how to cut the basket away without hurting the roots. Iwas wondering if the plastic basket could be dropped down in an 8in cedar basket and work the roots out of the bottom. This was a mail order purchase as usually i buy vanda hanging on wire. The vandas are healthy and look great, but roots on vandas need to be free.

I would just say leave it, and keep it going. The roots will eventually sort themselves out, but i am no expert. Cathy? Connie? You guys know more than i do!

Leave it...just attach your wire. You don't need the wooden basket. In a year or so you wont even see the black plastic basket.

I agree with the previous posts, just leave the basket in place. Use a wire to hang it, like Cathy said. If you really want to use a wood basket, you can place the plastic basket inside it and wire it in place. Commercial growers do that all the time. When they move to a larger basket they put the smaller one inside it. They don't remove it. But a simple wire, like Cathy suggested, is the easiest way to go.

I am new to orchids, but joined an orchid society. We had an orchid grower visit our club and i bought a Vanda from him. He said to put the plant and pot into another pot, do not disturb the roots. it was also suggested that you place a bit of medium in the bottom of the new pot. Also, mist the roots daily.

I just had a nice visit to ---- Vendor information removed - see FAQs on Posting ---- I specifically asked this question, ---- Vendor information removed - see FAQs on Posting ----. I was told to leave my Vandas in their original baskets rather than risk injuring the roots, as injury will set them back substantially or even kill them. They can happily grow forever in a 3" basket!
