Encyclia boothianum

This plant, also known as the silver dollar orchid for the shape of it's pbulbs, is another that is native to Florida. I bought it last year and hung it over with the vandas. I hadn't paid much attention to it until it began growing three new pbulbs all at the same time this spring. To my suprise all three had sheaths that developed and I am in love with these tiny flowers. One set was opening before they were all the way out of the sheath. As they age the flowers begin turning a deep orange color, while the new flowers are yellow. This plant has been a nice suprise...and I love the tiny spotted flowers.

Connie that is really a keeper ! I wonder if it has been used in hybrids with Cattleyas, I am thinking it will be a good parent to pass on those striking patterns.

When an adult, the pbulb is roughly the size of an American silver dollar. The leaves are 3-4 inches long. It's not a big one. The flowers are maybe an inch or inch and a quarter. And at first I would have sworn it was an oncidium. I wouldn't have thought Encyclia at all. Maybe they will change the name in a few years....lol.
