    Default BC. Little Marmaid 'Janet'

My little Marmaid had 4 buds but 3 of them were eaten off by roaches. Only one bud survived and made it to blooming. Can anybody please advise me how to keep the roaches at bay. I have my orchid collection on my patio 24/7 here in Orlando florida and I had buds eaten off and also a few leaves got eaten on. I checked for cater pillars and other insects at could no find any just roaches. What would you recommend? I read somewhere to flash the pots with some solution but can't remember what it was. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks, here is my lonly beauty.

Beautiful! That's a really nice example of BC. Little Marmaid 'Janet'. I don't know about roaches but when you say some leaves have been eaten I would suspect snails. They can do a lot of damage in a short time. There's slug and snail bait available that will kill them.

Wow thats gorgeous! really unfortunate that you got the other buds eaten but I would agree with Jeff snails or slugs can do a lot in one night, specially since we've been having so much rain lately, I'll bet a soon as it rains especially at night if you go and walk around your growing are you'll see them come out. Try to get slug bait you will be able to control them if not they will continue to do harm. Good luck

Lovely little catt! I'm so sorry you lost the other buds - I can sympathize (although my buds usually fall victim to ME). Funny thing about roaches, though - I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex in Atlanta and my catts are outside 24/7 all summer. We have roaches, but the snails and slugs don't climb stairs, apparently, and I've never had any of my catts eaten by critters of any sort. On the other hand, our local nursery has a terrible problem with having their most beautiful catt blooms eaten to shreds by snails or slugs (same thing, really). Maybe you have roaches with really good taste in Orlando, but there's no harm in trying to guard against the slimy things - some people put beer in small cups around their plants and the slugs love to dive in.

For many years it was very common to see this cross listed as Little Marmaid but RHS finally got the registration corrected to Little Mermaid as was originally intended by the registrant. Also, RHS calls it Brassocatanthe (Bct.) now rather than Brassocattleya (Bc.). Always a beautiful flower no matter what name you use.
