Moved and Took my Orchids, too

Hi everyone, I just moved to college and brought my orchids with my so my mother wouldn't kill them at home. I have an east-facing window, but unlike my east window I kept them in at home, this one is shaded by trees. How can I supplement the light they receive without bothering my roomate, or spending a terrific amount of money? Eventually I'll have to move them from the window, because the heater is right under it, and they will be blasted and killed when the heat comes on for the winter. Any suggestions would be helpful. I brought my three orchids with me- a Brassia "Eternal Wind Summer Dream," a Dendrobium "Burana Sunshine," and a Phalaenopsis "French Spotted." They seem to be doing ok with the light levels so far, but what should I do when I have to move them away from the window and the radiator for the whole winter? It's not so warm/moist/sunny up here in Mass. USA for the winter. Thanks!

Hmmm a pretty varied collection. But I found one thing that works for a small collection of Phals of mine, so might work for you. You can buy one of those floor lamps that have the full spectrum flourescent bulbs. It's about $75.00, but it's portable and you can use it as a regular light when reading/studying, etc. They have a goose neck so you can adjust the position. PM me if you want a reference to the specific type I have. Then just set the pots on top of pebbles in a water filled tray to humidify.

I use 4 foot shop lights with daylight bulbs. That's bright enough light to bloom a phal and the Brassia, not sure about the Den. I have my lights on a timer- 14 hours a day. Maybe that can work for you?
