    Default Paphiopedilum supardii

This is another favorite multifloral Paph species of mine.

Not very commonly grown, this plant is BIG and the flowers are odd looking because the petals are contorted instead of long, spirally and pendant. I'll post another pic when the buds are all open.

What a healthy looking plant! Not that that's really a surprise or anything. I looked it up - different petals!

Thanks, Heather! The blooms are certainly very unusual and I'm looking forward to seeing the blooms. The plant is a little over 2 feet across, same size as one of my rothschildianums.

People say that supardii is the coryo that seems to be most closely related to roths. Plant size & habit, flower shape (except the petals), coloration...

David Ott (sup x roths) is an attractive hybrid that looks like a roth but with stonei petals.

Yes, supardii is very closely related to rothschildianum, in fact the two species when not in bloom look identical.

It is very lovely! I think I could stare at it all day and not get tired of looking at it!

    Default Photo update.

Paph supardii buds are now also opening and these blooms have weird contorted petals that look deformed. Here is the latest pic.

I'll post another one when all the buds are open. I really really hope that I'm not boring you all with my pics! Thanks for looking!

    zzzz...*yawn*

Just kidding, I'll be nice. That is a lovely picture, but I think the petals are really kind of freaky, in a pretty/species orchid sort of way. I always get to wondering about why they are the way they are. Do the petals ever straighten out w/ age?

No, the petals don't straighten out as they age but they do get a little more "deformed" looking which makes this species unique.

I really like it. There are plenty of 'perfect' looking blooms. This one has so much character! Bravo.

    Cheers!
