Great display Igor. These are gorgeous blooms. I saw these in the nurseries in our highlands where they attracted a lot of attention.

Oh No! I am really sorry to hear that, Angela. Hmm Barbados... well I guess it may just be too warm, or too even temeratures..? Burragearas are, I think, mainly made up of upland and cloud forest genera BUT it is a forgiving hybrid, otherwise I could not grow it well (really cool highland orchids are a nightmare even for me in England!) But here is a positive: it is a pleasant developement to see an orchid that actually thrives better in windswept Britain than in a tropical paradise. From now I shall always think of you now when tending this plant. I shall say to myself "for Angela."

About 3 years ago I visited a local nursery and saw one of these plants. I was overcome with the colour and beauty of the flowers. Reluctantly I paid a whopping price for it, took it home and the flowers lasted for a long time and then the plant just died. They will not do well in my climate.

Thank you my friend; it is really interesting to hear feedback about this favorite plant of mine from other parts of the world like you and Angela. I know I collect Cattleyas, Encyclias and friends- but this Burrageara has a special place in my heart! (Especially since my bad experience with Odontioda hybrids.)

Yeah yeah, this is a stunner and no mistake, I am honestly drooling and so on (I hates thee, really, I have bad experience with the alliance), but I noticed that no one congratulated you on those AWESOME FERNS! You must have perfect humidity and temperature! I have to say that in my experience there is nothing in the world more difficult and ready to sulk at the slightest sneeze as a fern!

    Cheers!

Gosh, thanks Laura! And you are so right: it is a hateful alliance... such desirable plants, and yet so DIFFICULT and FUSSY. Cool, high altitude, constant humidity... that spells trouble big-time. I generally avoid the Oncidiinae because I simply cannot look after my plants 24/7! But I am finding a few hybrids that really work- like this X Burrageara. I have a MILTONIA maiden hybrid just opened for the first time: it is a delightfully sturdy and meaty plant, very un-Miltoniish. I believe X Colmanara contains some tough plants (and fantastically pretty ones, too.) I shall try to post my Miltonia tomorrow.

I do use a humidifier controlled by its own humidistat; this time of year it stays off but in the summer it works nearly constantly. The big beautiful fern in the photo is Woodwardia radicans: very grand and splendid because the fronds have very long elegant stipes. Also it produces keikis- one at the tip of some fronds. It is a forgiving plant and a good grower that soon develops into a specimen. O would recommend it to anyone that can protect it from frost. W orientalis has new growth which is brilliant red, like a Japanese Acer in autumn. My friend Peter is a fern expert and has encouraged me, so thank you Peter!

Here's a close up of mine. It now has 3 flowers opened with a few more to go!
