    If you look closely at the first picture, you'll see one coming up on the largest bulb in the upper left (:

    I agree with Andrew: by comparing photos, I can see it is the oldest surviving leaf (the previous bulb on the rhizome is leafless) and slowly on the way out.

    But what a pretty plant! That's why I adore Encyclias- they are impossibly cute, even out of flower... some even have a blue/silver dusting, while others have a yellow sheen.

    I agree (: It'll definitely be spoiled!

    I have to admit, this little guy is the highest maintenance plant I have!
    My bromeliads are just sitting on their shelf, asking for nothing.

    Hopefully, that little spike will grow to be a flower (:

    Encyclia's grow flower spikes from the top(apical) of the pseudobulb not from from the base(basal) of the pseudobulb. That "spike" that you see will be a new leaf and pseudobulb.

    Oh, ok! So that's just a new pseudobulb in the making.

    I've also noticed that the white roots are developing little growths!

    Well there you are... You see how well it's doing! That's your next season's growth right there. It gets longer, chubbier, leaves open, and bingo- here comes the spike. Most (maybe all?) Encyclias produce a pale little sheath at the top, like their Cattleya cousins do, from which the spike emerges.

    You guys have taught me so much about orchids already! Thanks so much (:

    I finally feel confident I can take care of my new orchid.

    I'm already looking forward to my next one (;

    Thanks for that very useful info. I am currently into growing "naturally" i.e. bare root on branches etc, and I have just moved a clump of tampensis alba (Mendenhall strain - although it doesn't seem any different from any other I have grown) on to a branch, although I didn't use oak. I have some good oak pieces, I'll move it again.

    Are they no longer protected in the wild?
