I have both Ceramic metal halide & HPS bulbs for my growroom setup.
The Ceramic Metal halide are a direct replacement & don,t need a different ballast.
Light given off is full spectrum so it appears very much like natural sunlight , where as my HPS bulb gives off a distinctly red tinged light.Which is best for my plants .I,ll give the CMH a few months & see how it goes.

T8 fluorescents, 4-4' tubes per shelf. Bulbs are Phillips Daylight Deluxe, 6500k, 2900 lumens, color rendering 85. Works great so far! All available at my local HD.

Used to use the Wonderlites (150w Mercury Vapor). Took too many and then heat and humidity became headaches....then the spider mites came! ARGH! Then I realized I'd "overdone" the light, dropped back to fluor. and am much, much happier.

I have about 100+ orchids. They bloom and rebloom fine under the T8s for me with some light from windows (nw, n, and west). I also grow some in a south window without any supplemental light during winter. They tend to have humidity issues that I don't have in the main area under lights.

In the main area I have tons of drip pans that I leave water in and, I suppose due to volume, the humidity out there has remained good even during the hot summer. On cloudy days, like today, it's in the 70% range!

    Hope this helps....Maggie

I use high-wattage compact fluorescent bulbs. My current setup over my orchidarium consists of a large lighting hood and 2 85W CFLs.

I have another small growing area for my larger plants and I use a single 85W bulb.

I use compact fluorescents werever I can because they are cheaper to opperate. I got 2 led lights for christmas I have them in my basement setup over small Cattleyas and they are doing well. The LED lights use less energy than the comact flouresents do. The LED I have are the square ones with all the little lights in them. I want to try some of the bulb type LED that fit in a normal light scocket.

I grow under a 400 watt metal halide and a t-5 high output with 4 four foot tubes. Also a few using just window light.
