Ron-NY made some great suggestions! I really like The Dr. Joe Walker (you'll be amazed by how big the blooms are)

    Have you seen
    Blc. Pamela Hetherington
Blc. Dr. Joe Walker (great rose fragrance)
    C. Penang 'Black Caesar'
Blc. George King 'Southern Cross' (may be too sunset for you but I ove this one)

An old classic green is Blc. Memoria Helen Brown
I'm with Ron on this - plus maybe a Goldenzelle.

Rlc Haadyai Delight -6 inch beautiful clean yellow
Blc King of Taiwan - 7 inch dark lavender
Blc Pink Empress - 7 inch light lavender
Blc Pink Diamond - 6 inch medium lavender
C Queen Sirikit - 5 inch regal white

These are not overly ruffled and all are scented. I have recently acquired Blc Pink Empress and the flower is humongous but the p-bulbs are hardly 7inches tall.

Have a look at lc chian-tzy Mildcompton.
I've got one, but the sheath blasted (I moved her along too much), so I still haven't got her to bloom.
she's working on two new growths right now, so who knows. Perhaps I can get her to bloom this season.

Wow.... you folks are the best!!!

So, after spending the last couple days on the internet looking at what could best be described as "Cattleya porn," I have narrowed it down to about TEN finalists. Yep. Ten. You all really got the idea of what I was looking for, and while I was hoping I would find one or two that would jump out at me, I now have ten that I will be saving up to buy. Or not buy, considering I only have so much space... and the purpose of this was to find BIG ONES, so, um, I may need to stick to two or three...in which case I'm really going to need to puzzle over this for a while...so many of them made my jaw drop!

You all must be mind readers, because there wasn't a SINGLE ONE that I didn't like. Not one. (This is coming from a person who joined this group not even wanting to buy ANY Cattleyas because she didn't like the ruffles and the sunset colors). You obviously put some thought into your suggestions, which I sincerely appreciate. There wasn't a single clunker in the whole bunch! Even the Blc George King 'Southern Cross' that Ron thought might be too 'sunset' for me was surprisingly AWESOME because it was way more peachy-toned than orangey-red.

Oh...and I also want to say 'thank you' to Ron for recommending the classic green Blc. Memoria Helen Brown, which I think I like better than either of the greens I had been previously considering. I'm so glad I didn't just impulsively buy a Greenwhich 'Elmhurst' or a Lester MacDonald, because I would have kicked myself when I saw the Blc. Memoria Helen Brown.

I am seriously blown away by all of these gorgeous Cattleyas...I never would have found most of these just by poking around on the internet, so THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

The down-side is, if I buy more than two or three, I'm pretty certain you'll find me on the side of the road somewhere with about 200 orchids around my feet, holding a sign that says "Will work for fertilizer," because my husband will finally just throw me and all of my plants out.

I'm seriously going to have to puzzle over which ones to buy. This is going to be difficult!

I'll try and pop back into the thread later and let you know which ones I ultimately decide on! Big catts, here I come!!

Yes, definitely go after a Memoria Helen Brown, but if you can't find one, Ports of Paradise, I think is the name, is a great alternative. Isn't the SEPOS show coming up? If you can get to that, you really should - buying them in person is SO exciting, and you'll see others as well. By the way, did I mention C.G. Roebling 'Sentinel'??? Would be my top choice, I think. I had one and killed it with ignorance, but I'm looking for another. And if you're as much an "instant gratification" person, like me, avoid buying seedlings just because they're cute and little and will fit into your collection - it will be a couple, maybe even 3 or 4 years before you see a bloom. Have fun! I think I'm going orchid shopping today, too!

While not a major floof by any means (those never really appeal greatly too my tastes), one somewhat floofy I would do is Blc. Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon'.
