    Question Den. repotting

    Hello everyone!

I have a den. that desperately needs a repot, but I'm concerned about repotting it. I've heard that they just despise being repotted, however, I have roots everywhere! One is about 14" long and questing up the wall behind it!

I don't plan on disturbing the core of the plant. It's planted on a huge core of solid CHC(as far as I can tell). It's growing it's new cane for the season right now and it's about 14-16" tall. I really just want to pot it up a bit, and get rid of the older bark chips.

    When is the right time?

Oh, it's a regular dend-phal, not one of the deciduous types.

    Thanks.

    Sam

I repotted my den when the new growth began showing tiny new roots, in spring. Like little green bumps (the root tips). It did fine after repotting and later put out three new growths. But, of course, growing conditions play a role too...

    Gin,

It is in a pot, with the centermost part of the rootball sitting over the top of a block of CHC. I've seen many commercial dends planted this way.

The newest growth is growing very well, and there are new roots all over the place! all of them actively growing and having green tips.

Maybe I'll wait until after the next spike to do it. I just figured that if the roots were still actively growing, that it might be an ok time to repot...

    Just curious, what is CHC?
    Thanks Ryan

Coconut Husk Chips. A very popular potting medium.

I think I would wait awhile . I get how it is potted now I had a couple like that , they were mini Dends. was a mess trying to get them out of the chunk , the roots are brittle and crack easy that is why it is best to catch them before they get to long .
Just some trivia. I read an article on the coco hunks it said the seedlings are put on them by a machine . Gin

    Actually...I guess it isn't CHC, it's coco-husk fiber?

Anywho, I'll wait, but it's sure to be an undertaking. I plan on leaving the fiber chunk in it just beacuse I don't know what I'd do after that. No matter what, it would need massive support under the center of the plant.

I wish I had the room to take a piece of lavar rock and attach it to it. I love the look of orchids grown as lithophytes.

Hi, I heard that what some people do is to soak the plant for about and hour and that would soften the roots so that they become more pliable and won't crack. Has anyone heard of that as well?
