    Default Phrag grows and grows!....

And never a spike in sight! Since I bought my phrag last year it has put out 2 full growths, with three new ones on the way. I keep its feet wet, recently repotted, and talk to it all the time : ) I am starting to think that it might need more light. Its leaves are a bit dark...and they seem more "floppy" than other pics I have seen of phrags in bloom. Would love advice on coaxing her into spike.

Hi Stacie, my Phrag just flowered for me for the first time. It's growing in fine bark and I water it when it goes to a dry side, observed it through the translucent pot it is in. Watered it when the pot was clear, without any condensation on the inside. Light wise, mine is on the windowsill all the time. I'd recommend not to keep it wet, and yes, talking does a whole lot of good! keep it up

I would gradually increase the light. Phrags can take fairly bright light, almost the intensity of a Cattleya.

Or you could just send it to me and I'd put an end to the problem .... Instead of "grow, grow, grow" it would simply "die, die, die."

Phrags are fine with wetness, increase the light, mine grow with cattleya light levels and have stiff, upright, light green leaves, and has flowered for me.

Just a thought, do they need a drop in temperature to initiate blooming? I know little about Phrags.

Phrags do prefer a drop in temp at night

I keep all of my many Phrags in the windowsill or as near to it as possible. They are all doing great and blooming regularly. Keep them as wet as you dare - apart from the drier loving ones if you have any in your collection - and keep them as bright as you can. They require regular fert. - diluted greatly - and then just let them be. I bet that they will be blooming before you know it! Good luck.

Keep it wet--even if it means watering every day-- and don't let it dry out. Give it a teaspoonful of blood, fish and bone twice per year. I have noticed with my Grande's that if you are getting plenty of growths you will have a decent root system. You will probably find if you have multiple growths you will get multiple spikes especially if it is flowering for the first time. You don't mention the name of your phrag, if it's got caudatum in its build up then keep it damp and give it more light. Phrags are one of the easiest orchids to grow but they can be a bit fussy about when to flower--a spike will appear when you least expect it!!!
    Good luck,

    Ed

I say increase the light. I also grow my phrags in the warmer end of the greenhouse and they bloom wonderfully there. You should get a bloom on each new growth each year. If they are not blooming and are mature enough - increase that light.

    cheers,
