I'm at work at that time, so it's a non-issue for me. Here's an old question from tech school days.
Q: What are the three most important tenets of computing?
A: Backup, backup, backup.
The current policy is fine the way it is.

Keep the noon backup. The added security is worth the hassle for me.
Get rid of the damned noon backup. I pulled out too much of my hair already because of it.
Each day at 1:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Central Time, a backup of the forum's databases are initiated. Because of the size of the forum, the process takes about 20 minutes to complete, and during this time, it looks as if the site hangs--new pages won't come in; posts won't submit, etc. Clicking on links only queues more requests to the server, and if you're not careful and click too much in complete frustration, the firewall will think it's under attack and block your IP address completely for a certain length of time.
The noon backup, I know, is particularly irritating.
We implemented the noon backup to keep things as current as possible in case of emergency, but I was hoping to get you folks's feedback about this policy. What do you think? Should we keep the noon backups, or back up only once per day at 1:00 a.m., knowing that 12 hours more of posts and pics might be lost if we have to do a restore?
Please vote!

Maybe the 2 scheduled backups are "particularly irritating" for european members (1:00 a.m. is my morning visit and 12:00 p.m my after work visit).
But, you have to do it. Now, I'm used to do with this. Don't worry.
Do what you need to do, there are too many time zones to accommodate.
Thanks to all of you who responded and voted. I'm glad you chose security over convenience! (the one vote to the contrary was my own... )
A quick update; I changed the database storage engine to now allow us to do backups while the forum is still running: no more noontime lag.
Enjoy.....
