December blooming oncidium alliance orchids: Rodriguezia decora

I did better with the odons this year and one of them rewards me with a magnificant massive spike full of flowers, 50+ of 2-3 in. flowers! All of my relatives/friends went gaga over this plant during our Christmas party.

Wow, that's very beautiful! Odas are one of my favorite orchids because of their vibrant color patterns. Yours is no exception--not only nice but looks healthy too. Good growing .

This oncidium bloomed in the summer with a beautiful 4 feet spike with golden flowers. Now it reblooms from the old spike 4 months later. I don't see this often for an oncidium. Equitants do this but oncidiums, hmm...

I like the colour on this... also, regarding the re-flowering of the spike, I've noticed that my Wilsonara Kolibri has extended its spike and have new buds and also the spike has branched... so maybe depending on the parent used, it might have a tendency to do this...

Hi Tim,

You are right. Depending on the parents, some oncidium intergenerics will rebloom on the old spike. Now I remember, my Onc. incurvum does this a lot!!!

Another oncidium intergeneric plant in bloom. Piper posted in this forum last year but I really like its dark color and unusual shape! Easy growing plant!

Your photo here is much better than mine were last year.

This fellow just finished blooming again last month. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to snap any better pictures. What was interesting was that one flower spike (with 16+ flowers) came off last years growth (which had only had a single spike off the opposite leaf) and a second spike came off this year's new growth. I don't know if it will continue to alternate like that year after year, but the 40+ inch spikes with all those spidery flowers are quite spectacular!

Most brassia have greenish color but the flowers of this plant from the above cross turn yellow after about 1 week.

Hoa, my Brassia verrucosa also yellows within the first week it's open. It still retains green hints, but there is a definite color shift. The light in these photos washes out some of the yellow, but I remember thinking, "oh no - it's fading so soon!" But it didn't. It yellowed, and then continued to bloom for over a month. The flowers are very fragrant and the plant grows like a weed.

Since you posted pictures of the Brassia verrucosa, I feel obliged to post mine as well even though my plants are not in bloom. I am surprised to hear your brassia has yellow blooms. Mine always have green flowers! The brassia that got yellow flowers similar to your pictures in my collection is another species, Brassia arcuigera.

These two brassia species are temperature tolerant (not warm growers like many brassia species/hybrids) so they can be grown outside in the garden year round here in Southern Cal!
