Question yellow band around leaf on rescue phal?

    Hi Everyone,

I need your expert advice again. I'm rescuing a phal from root rot (see "newbie trying to save phal...did I do everything right?" in the next forum. It's on the recovery road as it's actively growing a new root, about 1" long now...

I noticed yesterday that the best looking leaf (the youngest one of the 3) now has a tiny yellow band all around it. I know it was not there before. It forms a very small and well-defined margin (leaf is 2" wide, margin is 1/32 only). Upon closer inspection I've noticed another leaf also has it but it's even thinner on that one. Sorry I can't post a pic as my camera is not working right now.

The plant is otherwise as healthy as it could be right now, the new root is fat and green.

I don't know whether I should be worried or not. I was wondering: is it possible that it is a sign the plant is getting back the nutrients from the leaves and they'll die soon? Should I start fertilizing then? (I'm thinking 1/4 strength or even less than that). The phal is sitting in pine bark and I'm not watering so it definitely doesn't get any nutrients right now...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi! Are you talking about yellow all around the edge of the leaf? Do you know if this is one of the varigated leaved varieties? That's a possibility. I would thing that a little misting of the root area with some very weak fertilizer solution would be okay...

    Hi Diane,

Yes it does look like a variegated leaf right now. The yellow band is tiny but all around the edge of the leaf. I don't know the cultivar's name of my phal so I can't double-check this, however I know it was not like that before and when I got it. So it did appear within this past week, on old leaves. I guess this doesn't make sense if it was truely a variegated phal, right?

I'm really tempted to spray the root with a diluted fertilizer solution. Do you think 1/4 is still too much? I only have a 1" root right now so it's just at the beginning of the recovery...

    Thanks!

i'd say try about 1/8 strength, watch for a couple days, and if it is doing well, spray again. Don't soak it. Just spray the root area. Did you use any rooting hormone?

Yes I did, I used the gel that I had here for cuttings. Seems that it did the trick...

I'll prepare a diluted fertilizer solution and will spray it tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

    Happy New Year!
