Hi, I wonder if someone can help me with this one? It was originally a VERY OLD plant (a Sanderiana hybrid) The original had grown very tall and gangly and I cut it - a new shoot (looking very healthy) has grown off the original piece but this bit has sprouted a new growth parallel to the other one! I thought it was a bloom on the way at first...Do I leave it, or break it off?

Leave it for now. You can take it off later when its grown a few roots.

Thanks Chris will let you know what happens. I can only just make out the writing on the original label - it's Sanderiana x Ohuhu - would be nice to see some blooms one day!

That may-, or may not grow it's own roots, or it may wait for a long time to do so. Sometimes, in older vandas, the apical meristem just "craps out", the the plant grows a new one.

That hybrid is V. Mabelmae Kamahele

Concur with Ray. Eu.sanderiana grows roots only from the base and does not grow roots like other Vandas. I would suggest you leave it as is.

    How do I know what?

If your talking about the growth of the plant - experience. If you're talking abut the hybrid name - Orchid Wiz.

Sorry Ray, I didn't see the info (Sanderiana x Ohuhu) posted later in the thread. To be able to identify the hybrid based on the pictures of the plant without flowers seemed to fantastic to me.

Hah! I'll say, especially as I'm very sceptical of all flower-ID's.
