    Default Cynoches orchid culture

I have fallen in love with Cynoches and learned that they are almost, if not as, finicky as C. dowiana. Last week, at a orchid society sale I bought my first one. Now comes the hard part, I have read so much on their culture from the web that I am totally confused. The one thing that is repeated is to NOT water it during the months of December, January, and February or until I see new growth. I was told not to even mist it.

No idea what potting mix to use.
    No idea how much light.

Is there a general culture to another species (eg. Paph, Phrag, Cat, etc.) that I can compare it to?

    Any advise is appreciated.

i don't grow many cycnoches as compare to catasetums. but they share many similarity in terms of their culture. basically just with hold watering during their dormancy, that is when they shed all their leaves. general rule is water in accordance to the leaves, no leaf means minimal water required.
any media with good air circulation is good, but i can plant mine in pure charcoal media (for my local microenvironment here). as for the lighting, use cattleya lighting as comparison.
    good luck

Hi Chris. I have several cycnoches and cycnodes in my collection. As you've noted, these orchid require a rest period during which you don't water/feed them. I start the rest once they drop their leaves or Mid-December if the leaves stay green. Restart watering/feeding once the new roots from next years growth are 2-4 inches in length. Then water and feed heavily to support good growth. This years bulb will be next years storehouse. I grow inside so put in window with good light since you'll want light levels similar to that for a Cattleya. Good luck and good growing. Bob

Forgot to mention that I grow in a roughly 50:50 mix of lava rock and fir bark.
