Never throw away a dead looking phal if it still has good live roots.

This phal got a serious crown rot and all the leaves have fallen off but the roots are still look good and healthy.
I've read somewhere that such phal can give a basal keiki, so i decided to give it a try. I water and weakly fertilise the plant, i.e. the roots in this case, regularly like my other healthy phals, and surprisingly today i saw this green stub growing in between the roots. I'm very pleased that it's showing a sign of life and growth and hopefully it will grow into a new plant soon. Shall keep posted on how it grows and develops.

Congrats! The exact same thing happened to me during the past year. In fact, it ended up throwing up 4 keikis total. They're incredibly resilient plants.

It's doing beautifully!

This is when it started in early late November:




And this was just taken a few minutes ago:




As you can see, basal keikis grow rather quickly since they have the benefit of obtaining nutrients through an already well established root system. I'm expecting blooms next Spring, if I had to guess! I don't think I'm going to separate them from the mother stump, either...I'd rather keep them together to have a really good show when they all spike!

Wow!! Kelly, they have grown big and healthy. I would also leave them all together if they were mine for a great show when they bloom.
