Our summer sunlight here in Thailand can absolutely burn up orchid plants. The sunlight can be way too intense. Almost all growers here use shade cloths of 95% to 50% sun blockage.

No, except if you have a V. coerulea hybrid
It depends
The strap-leaved Vandas are grown under 50% shade cloth in Thailand , where an enormous number are raised. Semi-terete and terete need much more so I believe, so much so that they are not sold in UK. But the strap-leaved ones grow well here. BTW I reckon that cattleyas need at least 50% more light, if that is any help.

Well, why do people always associate mainly Vanda with high light? There are many Cattleya alliance species/hybrids that need as much or even more. Rhyncholaelia digbyana doesn’t bloom if it doesn’t get enough light. The same applies to C aclandiae and walkeriana, for instance.

Just a guess: Your examples are certainly correct, but looking at the genus as a whole (and let's not forget that papilionanthe was lumped in with them), vandas need more light than do cattleyas
