Default Phalaenopsis flower spike(?) emerging from centre of leaves?

Is this what I think it is? It looks like a flower spike emerging from the centre of the plant, next to the newly emerging leaf tip.

Is this a common thing? I have not seen it before. This particular Phal flowered in the usual way last year, with a spike emerging from below the second leaf.

That isn't coming from the center, but from below at least the youngest leaf, so it isn't a terminal spike. But I wouldn't be surprised if it is actually coming from lower on the plant and just didn't find the most direct path out. It doesn't look quite like a normal spike though so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Please post some more pics as it develops.

No, not a terminal spike, but strange none-the-less. I hope you will share more photos to show its progression.

    cheers,

    ...and after 4 more weeks...

Also interesting that this spike initiated at the start of Summer.

And here's the final result. Very nice, and very normal!

Except that last flower doesn't seem to want to open - perhaps because it's early Autumn here and it's an unusual time to be flowering.

I was thinking that! I actually have it labelled "Queen Beer ??" ! It was a NOID gift.

Thing is, I heard that Queen Beer is fragrant(?). This one isn't.

The flowers are on the smaller side. Not minis. More medium-ish.

Might be a 'Queen Beer' hybrid. Many hybrids tend to lose their scent unless both parents are scented. Most breeding is done for color and shape.
