They are very cold hardy relative to orchids. I'm in North Florida where we usually get a week or two below freezing, and a few days near single digits. They are planted in the ground and flower evey year. I hope that helps.

The two irises in this old discussion are of different genera. Bruce's neomarica replicates via rhizome, rather than bulbs. They are cold hardy down to about freezing, if well protected.

    Hi Bruce,
The "walking iris" is not a bulb. According to Wikipedia "Plantlets grow at the ends of the flower stalks. As the plantlets grow, their weight causes the stalk to dip to the ground where they take root." Thus the name "walking iris".

I have grown them for years and they can take over your garden if you let them. I like to watch them bloom, right before they open they make this beautiful kind of "lantern" shape. Anyway they will bloom all summer here in New Orleans. Love the white and purple color. I also have several that are all purple. Good luck with yours!

What a beautiful flower, can't wait to see its full bloom.
