Default Home from the SB Show

Well, Hoa and I had a wonderful day spent looking, buying, buying, looking, buying, buying... etc. We did most of the purchasing at two local vendors we visited first. They were having open houses to coincide with the show.

Hoa had the camera - so don't ask me for pictures!!!!

There were some truly spectacular plants at the show, including a stunning clear yellow paph, and a fantastic white phal. A lot of cyms, some very nice Dens.... *Hoa pointed out all the Dens.

So I will spend tomorrow potting up the divisions I got and rearranging space. I'll also tell you the story behind my $1.99 In bloom, multi-growth Paph Julius.......

    Today’s small collection of purchases:

    Den. Specosium (very large plant)
Den. Kingianum –Cross, in bloom on about 6 spikes
Zygo. Blacki ‘Negress” x Blue Banks ‘Arrowhead’ in bud
Den Delicatum ‘ Apple Blossim’ - a dead stick that Hoa guarantees will grow
Den Nobile ‘Purple Clusters’ (???) – another dead stick that Hoa guarantees will grow
    Brassia Verucosa – small division
    Lealie Anceps (microscopic size) division
Brassavola Little Stars – small division
    Onc. Flexuosum – small division
    Blc. Goldenzelle ‘Lemon Chiffon’ NBS
BLC Erin Kobayashi ‘Amy Chen’ seedling
    Lc Bonanza Queen ‘Panamint’ seedling
Lc Mem. Robert Straight ‘Islander Delight’ seedling
Pot. Little Toshie ‘Yellow Rose’ – NBS
Epidendrum Sun Valley ‘Contrast’ x Pacific Vista ‘Beachball’ In bloom and spike
    C. Schoerderae – in bud
Phal Schillerania – in heavenly blossom
Lc. Canhamianum (mossieae x L. purpuratat) seedling
Paph Julius (Paph lowii x Paph rothschildianum) In Bloom BOY DO I HAVE A STORY ABOUT THIS ONE!
Cymbidium Khyber Pass x Sensation – 3 spikes, one fully opened

And also arrived today a Paph. lowii which I had ordered

Whew, I need to lie down for a while.........

    Hi you all!
I guess Diane already dished out tibits of our little intrepid orchid adventure and shopping spree! It was quite a good haul for Diane and she went home with many classic and prized purchases, including many dendrobiums (that I pointed out), the ones that she could just leave them on her patio and they grow! She has told you guys about the Paph Julius plant which I think is a great bargain. But I don't think she told you about the Dend. speciosum yet. When we were strolling through that nursery's greenhouse and our hands already were carrying all the orchids that we could carry, we came across a cluster of Dendrobium speciosum. I could not help it but pointed them out to her. Who could resist to such stately handsome plants? They look so sculptural, pretty even when not in bloom. As we put down our plants and tried to examine these beauties, two elderly ladies who were perusing these plants immediately gave us THE LOOK! You guys know THAT LOOK, the one that says "Don't you dare touching these precious! We were here first, so now beat it!" and they would not make room for us to check on the plants. As they overheard our conversation verging on buying one of these guys, one of them immediately GRABBED the BIGGEST PLANT of the lot and took off. Before darting away, she gave us ANOTHER LOOK, the one you all also know very well, the one that says, "See, I beat you, I GOT the BIGGEST BIGGY! The precious is all mine, mine, mine! Naanna nnnaaana! Tongue sticking out and all!" So we had to settle for the second biggest boy. (I have to use "boy" since even though they look impressive, these plants are still very young!) With the size of these plants and the price she paid for it, it is also another bargain!
The dend kingianum "hybrid" is also another good buy! Its fragrance is so strong and so sweet! I could see many years of enjoyment to come!

BTW, Julie, we did ask the catt growers at the show for your Daybreak plant, but no body has it. I think that we have to employ other strategy and might have to advertise this request at the mall.
    Cheers. Hoa.

LOL - - I was worried that Hoa and the Dend Lady were going to end up duking it out for the plant!! I have to say, I learned so much about dens while shopping with Hoa, it was great! The plant we picked up is 'still young' per Hoa, but it's sure a lot bigger than the other ones for sale we saw at other places. I'll try to get a picture tonight.
