This orchid is special to me so I wrapped up the ugly pot to bring indoors and admire. In the spring it had a spike with 50 flowers. This one has just 8. Any reason why? Just trying to get educated.

I tried to attach a pic but I don't think it worked.

Living in Florida as we both do I can only offer what I do for the Phalaenopsis that I have. I sometimes bring blooming orchids into my covered porch on a counter, the window in the kitchen shows that counter and allows me to see the blooms more often as I am in the kitchen a lot during the day, after blooming mine go back to the environment they are normally in.

The nurseries here in Florida who grow blooming Phalaenopsis that are available year round are forcing the plant to start a spike by putting then in large walk-in refrigerators, they need cold temperatures to do that. As we both live in Florida I am sure you have had your a/c on since April and will not turn it off until our fall starts, I am still waiting for that to happen, in other words you are providing the cold they need. In the second picture you posted with the big flower count if that plant has been kept indoors since spring it has missed the heat and humidity our orchids like in nature thus producing a second bloom from an orchid that normally only produces flowers once a year but it has also missed the energy from the heat and humidity to help produce those big number of flowers. Bring them indoors to enjoy when you have those blooms but it is better for that phal to go back outdoors after it blooms.

Hi jack. Thank you for your input. It was outside in between blooms so I guess I was blessed with another spike and am grateful.

One more question for you Jack - is this a phalenopsis? I thought it was an Oncidium.

I think Jack meant oncidium but the fingers betrayed him and typed phal. It is an oncidium type.

Harvey is right it is an Oncidium and I knew that! I first clicked on your post at 12:14 AM but at the same time I was watching a program "Wild China" and my mind was watching and listening to that instead of what I was typing, in fact it was close to 2 AM before I hit the "Post Quick Reply" button. At my age I can not do two thing at once, how I got on Phalaenopsis is beyond me.
