I am interested to see your choice of camera, i have the same model to take out , using the kit 18-55 nikkor lens. I also have D300 which I use for most of my indoor shots, but it feels like a tank compared to the D5300.
I use a very old nikkor 60mm f2.8 macro a lot, I reckon I have had it for 40 years now , but I need somthing longer for attempts to capture insects - especially if I try to use Stackshot - but the price of the long Nikon macro ( is it 180 mm and about US$ 1500 ?) rather frightens me ! I see a lot of recommendations for a similar Tamron at about half that price, but even that seems a vry great deal.....
But I suppose I shall have to do something when the warmer weather comes - not many insects to be seen at Xmas in UK .

I was in a thrift shop last year and got an old Nikon camera and a bunch of Nikon lenses, close up lenses, filters and the manuals. The whole thing was $20. I understand that I can get adaptors to connect the old lenses to a new digital camera but I haven't looked into it yet.

I was lucky to find these last 2 ( old discontinued stock ) mini flashes at one of our local photo shops at a much discounted price of US$7 each! What was more amazing is that these flashes have slave units built in and so saved me the trouble of fixing flash triggers/sync cables to the rig.I used the built-in flash on my camera @ 1/64 power as the trigger mechanism ( much like a Commander flash) to set off the flashes, without adding onto the exposure.

Here is a picture of the rig and some first-attempt pictures with it. I still have to fine tune the process and field test it for nature/insects etc. But I'm very busy at the moment with visits from my sons and grandchildren and relatives from Australia.

    Camera: Nikon D5300
    Exposure: f 16 @ 1/200 ....ISO 125
    Lens: Tamron SP 90

BTW in case anyone is interested, the first flower is that of the Bleeding Heart Vine ( Clerodendrom thomsoniae ) and the flower with the ants is Bauhinia kockiana one of the most beautiful flowering climbers native to our country.
Excuse me, but the use of the flash is too noticeable, especially on ant and yellow petal where the lights in several places recorded high values, 245,255,255, is endorsed by the harsh shadows and deep, to avoid the flash in macro (normally two, an x side of the subject, personally them mate with a Canon ST-E2) and not only should not be used directly, but whose indirect light reflected by a white reflector, it can also be used in the polystyrene or cardboard strictly white x prevent dominant, the flash must be properly detuned adapting to any situation.
If it helps illuminate the background you need a third flash, possibly driven by a bulb.
The light will be softer, enveloping shadows much less aggressive, if you want to see examples visit my website under Macro Link: Fotografia Naturalistica.
I attach scheme, ask for clarification if needed.
