I have read that pollen to be kept in freezer but don't have experience
To keep pollen - you need
1) one tissue
2) one envelope
3) one pen
4) one tooth pick or skewer
Method
Remove pollen from flower using a tooth pick or skewer and place in the center of the tissue.
Fold tissue to wrap pollen.
Using Pen - write the name of the plant that you have taken the pollen from onto the envelope.
Place tissue contianing pollen into envelope
Place envelope into the fridge. I keep mine in the top shelf in the door.
Note - The pollen will keep for about 2 years, but its vitality decreases with time.
Fridge, not freezer.
concur with Murray , but i kept mine in FREEZER. had done this many times, and i swear by it it works!!!
but as for seeds, they are stored the same way with exception they are stored in the chiller compartment and NOT the freezer or you will kill the seeds.
When you have yo collect polen? As soon as flowers open or let it be for some time?
Interesting. I have a question about orchid seeds. How long can we store orchid seeds in the fridge before they become unusable?
under proper storage condition, i had read in internet it can be kept up to four or five years. however, germination rate declines over time.
i had mine kept in fridge over two years now, still with acceptable to good germination rate.
i do not know if this varies among different species of orchids, but my observation is mainly for the catasetum genus.
