Default My blooming dendrobioums: Wattana Gold and two NoIDs

Just wanted to share some of my dendrobiums in bloom in my home and yard.

This Wattana Gold was one of the first orchids that I bought last May. It had a nice long spike with about a dozen blooms on it at that time, and on the way home -- just 10 minutes after I bought it!! -- it fell over and the spike broke off. This year, it has given me this spike with 11 buds and two new shoots coming up. Just this morning I was trying to straighten so I could put it next to a stick for support, I broke the spike part way! Hopefully, the other buds will open.

This NoId I bought for $5 from a little boy at a flea market last June. I took it out of the plastic pot divided it in two and mounted both pieces on a palm tree in the front yard. This is the first blooming since.

This last one I bought at the Tamiami orchid show just a month or so ago; so I can't take full credit. Just over half the blooms were open at that time. It's just sitting in a basket in my family room, and has so far survived three very active and agile pets -- two dogs and a cat that all like to run and jump. Fingers crossed for a spike that doesn't get broken. Still debating whether I will keep this one in a pot, or mount it on a tree in the yard once it has finished blooming.

Well done, too bad about the broken spikes. You might want to cut that spike and put in a vase.

Unfortunately, many of us have broken spikes. But we learn to avoid it after a couple experiences breaking them. I have a phrag that is almost back in bloom that I broke the spike off the first day it was in my home.

I thought about doing that; do you think the others will open in a vase of water? I'll give it a few days and see if any more open before I cut it off.

Well, some of the other buds on the Wattana Gold started to open up so I was feeling pretty good about my partially broken spike. But just my luck I came home this afternoon to see that the wind apparently blew the orchid over and the spike completely broke off anyway. LOL No choice but to put it in glass of water at this point.
