and here she is, in all her glory...I can claim no credit, as I am a complete amateur. I can only attribute it to our gorgeous warm winters and the summer rains. She has about tripled since I bought her 3 years ago. If I ever move, I'll have to find her a serious new home here in the Tropical South!Name: IMG_2317.JPG

Do you give it a winter rest?

I instinctively stop watering very much when I arrive, generally around Nov 1. The temps are still 85/70 with little rain, so there really isn't a rest until cooler weather kicks in around early Dec. This year, a La Nina, we got a few weeks of 70/50, but by early March we were right back up to 80. I guess those Jan-Feb cooler (relatively) days are enough to stimulate flowering.

But what do I know? She's the only dend amongst catts and phals and a few oncs. I've never been able to keep a vanda going for more than a couple of years. I guess what I'm saying is that there is very little rest in FL.

Here we are once again, folks...not much time in my life to tend orchids this year, but aggregatum has 9 spikes, despite my ignorance! I lost two flower buds, but still a good showing. She will get a new box outside her old one as soon as she finishes her bloom. The old one is literally falling to bits. I'll post some pix soon, as the flowers turn from greenish to pure gold.

Some of you may remember that several years ago I made an "orchid tree" as a result of my laziness I was tired of tending/moving/repotting 20 or so phals, so I slapped them all on a palm tree. Last year I lost almost every bud to rampant thrips, which do their damage before you even know they're around (especially if you don't bother to put on your specs to see them). This year I forced myself to mix up some Conserve in early November, and as a result the thrips didn't eat me out of house and bud. Let that be a lesson! Last night was gorgeous and warm--we turned on the outdoor lights trained on the tree, with the aggregatum hanging above, and it was a sight! Unfortunately, my phone camera produces pix that are too big to post...I'll take some more in the next days. Mea culpa.
