    Question Mature Vanda Sanderiana Roots

Hi. I'm a newbie from the Philippines. Recently, I bought two mature (flowering size) Euanthe (Vanda) Sanderiana and placed them under shade with bright skylight. They are not yet flowering because their season to do so is between July to October. I noticed that the lower roots on their trunks are woody and some root tips are wilted/emaciated. These roots are dry although I water them two times every day (they are hanging in their baskets). I also apply a systemic fungicide with copper compound every week. I cut the emaciated roots in fear that it could be infected by a fungus. I also cut many woody roots because they appeared sick to me (no velamen inside, just brown dried material). Luckily, there are some healthy roots left (they turn green every time I water them).

My question is, is it normal for mature Vanda Sanderianas to have old woody roots? Based on the articles I read from the internet, Sanderianas are slow growing orchids (even their roots are hard to grow). Hence, I feel hesitant every time I cut their roots. Please help. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome. Yes sanderiana is quite slow in growing roots and the old roots could be bit woody at the top but could have active roots growing below. Posting a picture might help diagnose. I am not sure if it is really worth spraying copper compound every week.

    Welcome from Florida.

I would agree with Sriram, copper weekly could cause problems! I just let all my roots from my Vanda's hang, I will only remove old roots when the complete root is wrinkled or if it is time to cut the roots because of the length, many of mine are in for a root cut this month as some of them are 4 feet or longer.

Thank you for your replies. I will immediately stop spraying copper compound weekly. I will post pictures by the time I get into my desktop. Thank you again. 😊

Just a slate update. After moving my Sanderianas into a brighter spot, and spraying Calcium-Boron-Zinc by Sangrex, more roots emerged after one month of spraying. In fact, the second Sanderiana in the picture bloomed for me last October. Enjoy this picture from her.

Is it possible to get a picture of the bottom of you roots, what I see so far is not anything I don't see on mine, I am more interested in the tips of the root, they could be a variety of different colors on the tips but should look like new roots, if that is the case your roots are fine but a picture of that would help to a definite answer to your question.

Agree with Jack. The plant itself otherwise seemed to be in good condition.

Don't know how I missed this update. I didn't realize waling-waling has such a wide variety in colour. Beautiful! Happy to see your Vanda are happy
