Default Dappled light area for orchid growing

I've run out of shaded areas in my yard (not much to begin with) so had to come up with something to protect some orchids and others from what has been a very intense UV summer. I was going to get some camouflage cover like the stuff they use for military vehicles but the only surplus store here has closed. What I did was tack chicken wire onto a frame then tie strips of torn up bed sheet to that. Worked out pretty good and got rid of some stuff in the shed and linen closet. Don't think the plants will know the difference. Have to fill up the space in the morning.

All filled up. The plants in the foreground are Euphorbia millii var. Splendens. My wife had it sent from home years ago and it was 5' tall when it developed stem rot last winter. Not sure what I'll do with 30 of them. The orchids in the background are in 4" pots set into weeping tiles.

I am a big recycling fan and sure it is a reusable idea. Thanks for sharing Chris.

I'm kind of nuts about recycle/reuse. Whenever I buy something other than food the number of times it can be reused is the 1st consideration.

Me too. I like to build things out of reclaimed wood. A few days ago a neighbor brought me a 20 foot trailer load of scrap lumber. Some of it is sawmill lumber which is common around here and which is really rustic looking. I plan on having a lot of fun with it.

    Well done!

For future reference, slats of wood can also be used, and certainly makes the shade density easier to determine that little bows!

Thank you Ray! Easier maybe, but not as much fun as tying bows for two hours And it does sort of look like leaf shadows eh. The way I framed the wire it becomes next springs pea trellis simply by moving it to the veggie garden in the fall. I think the strips of cloth will have rotted away by the time I plant the peas. I would have to find somewhere to store the slats as well.

Excellent! I'm in the process of getting rid of all the lawn on the property. The front is done. The back is a veggie garden, fruit trees and I'm putting in three 4' x10' raised beds. I was going to have to get about 50 2'x2' patio stones for walkways between all that. That was going to cost about $550. Two weeks ago I bought 60 stones fro $20 at a yard sale
