Default Tree fern - which way is 'up'?

I'm told that there's a right way and wrong way to orient tree fern mounts:

    - For plants that prefer to be dry, like Cattleyas, they should be mounted so that the water runs though/off the tree fern.

    - For plants that prefer moisture, the tree fern should be oriented the other way, so that water really gets into it and stays there longer.

I swear, I have stared and stared at this material and cannot for the life of me see a difference that enables me to tell which way is which. What am I missing?

    Thanks

If it is natural tree fern it will have fibers that pretty much run in one direction. Put the material in some water and let it soak for a minute. Pick it up from one direction then the other. One way should drain off faster then the other. Or, just post a picture

Ooh, smart. I like that and now feel silly that I didn't think of it .
